Injectors and ignition systems are critical components for hydrogen internal combustion engines (H2 ICE), which are seen as a viable alternative to fuel cells for mid to heavy-duty applications due to their robustness and power delivery. HOERBIGER and Altronic (a member of the HOERBIGER Group), in cooperation with Prometheus Applied Technologies, provider of hydrogen combustion system know-how, are now advancing development of a solution for hydrogen ignition with prototypes already being available!
Currently, the performance of H2 ICEs faced difficulties resulting in 20 to 30% loss in power density and efficiency due to combustion instabilities. To overcome these difficulties and to achieve power and efficiency parity with diesel engines the AdaptH2 consists of 3 major components:
- Injectors with an adaptable nozzle design for a homogeneous injection of H2
- A predictive same cycle spark ignition control for proper ignition and prevention of hot spots
- A unique prechamber design for fast combustion of ultra-lean flames
Having homogenous mixtures is key to prevent the occurrence of LOP at BMEP levels. The sophisticated HOERBIGER H2 PFI injection system ensures a homogeneous H2 or CH4 mixture preventing rich pockets and combustion instability.
To ensure proper ignition of ultra-lean H2 mixtures and preventing hot spots on the electrodes the Altronic ignition system delivers an adaptive spark energy with same-cycle spark control. It predicts the start of combustion (SOC) and adjusts the spark energy keeping a constant SOC and reducing electrode surface wear.
H2 mixtures must operate ultra-lean to achieve high efficiencies. The in the AdaptH2 system innovatively designed prechamber ignition device greatly enhances combustion speed of ultra-lean mixtures. Additionally, the unique design eliminates fuel residues avoiding preiginition.
